Changemakers of the world.

Here is a short clip on a social entrepreneur of Ashoka, Mr Bill Drayton.

He talks about himself, being an ordinary person who visited india, and he found a need in the society there which invoked a certain emotion in him that made him want to do something for the people there. Social entrepreneurs have this burning passion in them to get up and take action. In the video below also with Mr Bill Drayton, he talks about how to be an effective social entrepreneur:

More About BZSE

When you graduate from the Business & Social Enteprise course, you can work as a manager, community development officer, marketing or corporate communication officer, or human resource executive in a wide range of non-profit and business organisations. These are some of the jobs that you can take up with the diploma. However, you can also make your own social enteprise to help others, such as the disadvantaged or the environment. It would be a very satisfying experience to help others, as well as be able to earn some income for your own needs. It would be like killing two birds with one stone.

In my first semester of the BZSE course, i've teamed up with some people to create posters, films as well as newsletters of a social enteprise. The social enteprise we worked with was Beautiful People, and their cause to help disadvantaged girls integrate back into society through training programmes and workshops. We managed to interview the social enteprise team of Beautiful People, and learnt more about their cause and what they do. We also learnt that social enteprises work differently from normal businesses because of the different business structure, and every business structure might differ from each social enteprise. The poster we made of Beautiful People is below, you can take a look at it:

The Business & Social Enterprise course is one that consist of both the business aspect, as well as the social impact aspect. This social impact can range from helping disadvantaged groups of people get back onto their feet, to helping the environment. Basically, it is doing business with a heart. This course would be suitable for those who is interested to run a business that can earn you money and help people at the same time. One very clear difference is that unlike other businesses, your social enterprise does not donate money to help, instead it has a social cause to help others directly. This means that you meet directly with the people in need, and will certainly meet new people and experience a totally different kind of lifestyle.

At first, I joined this course in Ngee Ann Polytechnic because it met my objectives of being able to run a business,as well as for a good cause. Now, after three months in BZSE, I feel that there is so much work to do out there. In contrary with most peoples' belief that donating money would help the poor, we in the BZSE course feel that by donating money, we are stripping these people of their pride. We should help them, by letting them help themselves. The business models that most social enterprises have are a lot different. It revolves around making money, but the money gets channelled to training people, rebuilding and refurbishing homes and places and many more ways to help the disadvantaged. You can think of any creative way to make profit and help others at the same time too! Join BZSE and embark on your journey doing something that benefits not only you, but everyone around you!
